Covington (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is slated to meet fellow welterweight and promotional newcomer Max Griffin (12-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 202, officials recently announced.

UFC 202 takes place Aug. 20 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Covington vs. Griffin will likely be part of the prelims.

Covington, a two-time Pac-10 champion and NCAA Division I All-American wrestler, won his first three UFC fights, including one over vet Mike Pyle, before a submission defeat to Warlley Alves. However, the 28-year-old rebounded in his most recent bout and earned a submission victory over late replacement Jonathan Meunier in June.

He now meets Griffin, a TPF and WFC vet who’s earned eight stoppages in 12 career wins. The 30-year-old most recently knocked out former UFC fighter David Mitchell via 43-second knockout in January.

Colby Covington will welcome former Tachi Palace Fights titlist Max Griffin to the Octagon at UFC 202.

Promotion officials recently announced the welterweight matchup. UFC 202 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Aug. 20 and is headlined by a rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor.

Anchored at American Top Team, Covington has been victorious in four of his five Octagon appearances, with his only setback coming against Warlley Alves at UFC 194. Most recently, the Springfield, Ore., native submitted Jonathan Meunier at UFC Fight Night “MacDonald vs. Thompson” on June 18.

Griffin enters his promotional debut having won eight of his last nine bouts. After losing the TPF strap to Chidi Njoukani last year, Griffin captured the West Coast Fighting Championship crown with a fourth-round stoppage of Randall Wallace in October. In his most recent outing, Griffin knocked out five-time UFC veteran David Mitchell in 43 seconds on Jan. 23.
